Abstract
996,056. Axial-flow blowers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 20, 1961, No. 22265/61. Heading FIC. [Also in Divisions F2 and F4] A blower comprises a duct having a semicylindrical portion ,and a portion defining an outlet throat extending along substantially the whole length of the duct, two spaced fans mounted coaxially with the semi-cylindrical portion and each adjacent an end of the duct for producing two gas steams each of which has a combined longitudinal and rotational movement, the rotational components being in the same sense and the longitudinal components towards one another, the combined steams leaving the duct substantially tangentially, and a prime mover for rotating the fans in the same direction. An electric fan-heater unit comprises a fan having two axial-flow impellers 14, 15 which draw in air from opposite ends of a volute 4, the two streams flowing towards each other and uniting to form a single stream which retains the whirl imparted by the impellers and is discharged tangentially from the volute. Each impeller may be bent up from a flat circular sheet of metal or may be a nylon moulding. The driving motor 7 is mounted within the volute 4 and drives the impeller shafts through resilient couplings 19, 20 each comprising a rubber or like sleeve. Self-aligning and oil-impregnated bearings 10, 11 are supported by rods 12, 13 passing through the motor laminations. The assembly shown in Fig. 3 is mounted within the volute 4 by securing the motor 7 to the volute. The mounting may include resilient means for damping vibrations. The motor may alternatively be located outside the volute 4 at one end thereof, or each impeller may have its own driving motor. Heater elements are supported within the outlet of the volute 4 by means of ceramic plates 25. Switching is provided for different blower speeds and different degrees of heat. Overheating due to the air flow being impeded operates a thermostat, preferably of manual reset type, to switch off the current, at least to the heater. The volute 4 may have flared inlet or outlet ports. More than one tangential outlet may be provided. The volute 4 is enclosed within an outer casing which may be provided with supporting feet or may be hung on a wall.
