[Also in Divisions A4 and B7] An automatic coupling enabling a hovering helicopter to hoist a fuel tank on board comprises an element 30 attached to the tank by threaded portion 31, and a line 4 attached to eye 32 on the element and paid out over land or sea. The helicopter picks up the line by a grapnel, and a member of the crew passes the end of the line through an aperture 34 in a coupling element 33 on the end of the helicopter hoist cable 8. The element 33 then slides down line 4 into element 30 as shown, whereupon hook members 35 engage in recess 36 under the influence of springs or gravity. The tank may then be hoisted. The members 35 are released by manual effort on tails 35a. The tank may be a bag, or as in Fig. 5 may be in two identical rigid halves secured together by flanges 23 and ring 24. A recess 26 is threaded to receive element 30, and recess 27 is for a hose connection. Ingress of air is permitted through recess 26 or elsewhere, and a flexible diaphragm 25 or extendible bag 25a separates fuel from air.
