Abstract

995,664. Pivotal mountings. STADIUM Ltd. Nov. 26, 1963 [Nov. 16, 1962], No. 43490/62. Heading E2F. [Also in Division B7] A pivotal mounting for a rear view mirror on a vehicle comprising a base arranged to be secured on a part of a vehicle and a support arm rotatably mounted on the base, the base containing an indexing member slidable along or parallel to the axis of rotation of the arm and prevented from rotating about this axis, it being urged by a helical spring into engagement with an abutment provided on or secured to the arm to locate the arm in a normal indexed position and to assist the return of the arm to this position when the arm is turned. In one embodiment Fig. 1 the base comprises a threaded sleeve 1 attached to the body of the vehicle 2 and provided with a bush 6 seating one end of a helical spring 7 which also bears against a sliding cam block 8 located in a recess 16 in the base proper 17. The cam block is of polygonal cross-section (e.g. square) corresponding to the cross-section of the recess 16. A spindle 20 secured to the mirror arm 23 is formed with an enlarged portion 25 which extends through the cam block 8 with clearance, and is provided with a transverse pin 27 normally located at the bottom of a cam recess of cam block 8. On rotation of the arm 23, the pin rides up the cam surface, lowering the cam block 8 against spring pressure, which thus tends to return it to its normal index position. The arrangement of spring and cam-block may be inverted. Rollers 164 Fig. 12 (not shown) may be provided to locate and facilitate movement of the cam block in the recess. In another modification Fig. 2 the cam block 40 bears on a mating surface 45, not a surface of revolution, so that on rotation of the support arm the configuration causes the cam block to descend against spring pressure. The shapes of the mating surfaces may vary as in Figs. 3-6 (not shown) and may form a part or be attached to the support arm. Fig. 10 shows a support arm having a skirt 135 to exclude dirt and water. The mounting Figs. 9, 9a differs in having two sliding plungers 98 instead of a sliding block. Plungers 98 slide in borings 99 in the base member 100 and project against pressure from springs 111 into an annular groove 101 in the base of the mirror carrying arm 102. This annular groove varies in depth providing pockets 104 at opposite sides of the axis.
