Abstract

995,602. Bearings. G. BLAIR. Aug. 21, 1961 [May 20, 1960; Sept. 21, 1960], Nos. 17904/60 and 32435/60. Heading F2A. In or for an axlebox 11, a bearer block 24 for an upper half bearing 51 has a plane surface 44 to abut a surface 23 of the box 11, a parallel surface 45 engaged by the upper surface of the half bearing 51, projecting lugs 32 at or adjacent one end to engage locating means, e.g. recesses 33, in the box 11 adjacent its open end and an upstanding rib 26 or upstanding lugs at the other end to engage locating means, e.g. a recess, in and adjacent the closed end of the box. The block 24 may be substantially solid when there are channels in the upper half bearing 51, or it may have a projection 28 with a recess or transverse channel 35 to receive oil from an oil thrower 37 within a cowl-like box outer end or running down the inside thereof, communicating with ducts or channels 34, 36 for conveying oil. The channel 35 communicates with recesses in the lugs 32 and each channel has at least one passage such as 41, which leads therefrom to a recess 42 in the block's lower wall. The half bearing 51 is received in a top space in the axlebox 11 when inserted into it through the open outer end, the box having lateral lugs 55 which with the box side walls locate the half bearing 51 when the block 24 is then inserted over the half bearing 51. When inserted into the top space, wings 54 on the half bearing 51 are aligned with the lugs 55 from above and then lowered for each wing 54 to pass between lugs 55. The box 11 with a bottom closed by a plate 13 has an oil sump 61, the cover 62 of which has an incorporated well 63 extending thereinto, with an integral or an attached well bottom. When lubricating with an oil thrower 37 the box 11 includes a lower half bearing 72 mounted on a bearing plate 71 on seats 66, 67. In an alternative lubricating method (when the block 24 may be solid), the members 71, 72 are omitted and the well 63 supports an oiler pad or wick into which ingress of oil may be permitted by a tube 64, extending horizontally as shown in Fig. 1, which may have a restricted bore to control passage of oil. Specification 926,130 is referred to.
