An electric clock comprises an oscillator 11, Fig. 1, which may be locked on to a signal received by an aerial 10 and which is connected to a ring of three counters 13, having lines 14,15,16 leading to a switch 17. The counter 13 provides a pulse train transmitted to a divide by twenty counter 19 connected in series to a seconds counter 21, a minute counter 23 and an hour counter 24 the pulse trains from which are transmitted to the switch 17 which is connected to a digital to analogue converter 29 which produces deflection signals for the vertical and horizontal deflection plates of the C.R.T. 33, the coated display face of which may carry a ring of hour numerals. The C.H.T. has three circular sweeps representing hour, minutes and seconds. The seconds "hand" may be replaced by a spot which moves round the face periphery. The push button 40,42 permits setting of the minutes and hours and the button 42 permits reception of synchronising pulses. A peripheral ring 100 divided into segments receiving selected voltages provide auxiliary magnetic fields to give the "hands" special configurations. Slave units also including C.R.T's may also be provided. In another example, Fig. 4, the clock face tube 101 comprises a combination of a cathode ray tube and an electron beam switching tube in the same envelope. A display element comprising a tube containing electrodes and filled with a solution of gas which changes colour on application of voltages to the electrodes is suggested.
