An image intensifier comprises a photocathode 2, focusing means 3a, 3b and a target including a BIC layer 5 and an electro-luminescent layer 7 between conducting layers 4, 8. As shown, layers 5, 7 are separated by an insulating layer 6. The electron image may be magnified or reduced, and two or more such intensifiers may be used in series.
