Abstract

Ethyl acrylate is made from aqueous acrylic acid, especially that obtained admixed with acetic acid by water scrubbing the gaseous product of the vapour phase catalytic oxidation of propylene or acrolein with oxygen, by a cyclic process which comprises the aqueous acrylic acid with a mixture of ethanol and ethyl acrylate so that acrylic acid is extracted into the ethyl acrylate phase and ethanol into water,distilling the ethyl acrylate phase to separate ethyl acrylate overhead and acrylic acid as base product, reacting the acrylic acid with excess ethanol under esterification conditions to produce ethyl acrylate and distilling the mixture of ethyl acrylate and ethanol therefrom and introducing this mixture to the extraction stage, Preferred features and variations include adding extra ethyl acrylate to the extraction stage, or to the esterification reaction to act as water retainer, the use of sulphuric acid as esterification catalyst and continuous liquid purge from the esterification reactor to avoid build up of high boilers. The invention is described with reference to a flow sheet (not shown) wherein the various alternative recycle streams are also indicated. The methods of acid extraction are similar to those in Specification 995,472. The example describes operation in a continuous flow plant. Specification 923,594 also is referred to.
