Abstract
Butyl acrylate is produced by continuously reacting at an elevated temperature acrylic acid, preferably produced as the reaction product of the catalytic oxidation of propylene or acrolein with molecular oxygen, with from 2.5 to 5 mols. of butanol per mol. of acrylic acid and only sufficient water to ensure the removal overhead of all the butyl acrylate as the ternary butyl acrylate/butanol/water azeotrope and all excess butanol as the binary butanol/water azeotrope in the presence of an esterification catalyst and continuously recovering butyl acrylate over free from acrylic acid. The preferred amount of butanol is from 2.5 to 3 mols. per mol. of acrylic acid. The additional water supplied to the reaction may be supplied in the form of water produced in the esterification and recovered in a subsequent stage; the esterification catalyst may be for preference sulphuric acid or sulphonic acid in an amount between 0.05 to 5% by weight of the total reactants. The process may be carried out at a temperature below 100 DEG C., preferably in the range of 70 DEG to 100 DEG C. and under a pressure of 200 to 600 mm. of mercury. The invention is described with reference to a flow sheet (not shown) which involves the use of an esterification kettle fitted with a fractionating column and several further fractioning columns interconnected to allow for the feed-back of water and butanol. According to data given, 8.8 mols. of water are required when feeding 2.3 mols. of butanol per mol. of acrylic acid and when operating under 300 mm. pressure. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 959,880.
