Abstract

Acrylic acid is prepared by reacting in a first stage propylene with molecular oxygen at an elevated temperature in the vapour phase over an oxide composition containing tin and antimony to give a reaction product containing acrolein, separating unreacted propylene from said reaction product, and passing the remainder of the reaction product substantially free from propylene into a second stage in which acrolein is reacted with molecular oxygen at an elevated temperature in the vapour phase over a catalyst comprising cobalt molybdate to produce acrylic acid. The separation of unreacted propylene from the gaseous reaction product of the first stage can be effected by condensing said reaction product to separate acrolein as a liquid phase or by washing the reaction product with water to form an aqueous solution containing acrolein and subsequent fractional distillation of said solution to recover acrolein as a concentrated overhead fraction. In a preferred ebodiment the propylene separated from the first stage reaction product is recycled to the first reaction stage and the remainder of the reaction product is fractionally distilled to remove materials having a lower boiling point than acrolein, the base product of said fractionation being passed together with additional oxygen, and steam or other diluent if desired, to the second reaction stage. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 864,660, 878,802 and 953,763.
