Abstract

Unsaturated fatty alcohols are obtained by the continuous hydrogenation of esters of unsaturated fatty acids in the presence of a catalyst consisting of the carbonates, hydroxides and/or oxides in amounts corresponding to 2-6 parts by weight of cadmium and 1.5-8 parts by weight of zinc, manganese or a combination thereof, to one part by weight of copper, the catalyst being reduced, e.g. with hydrogen, before the alcohol production. An example reduces sunflower oil fatty acid butyl ester.
