Abstract
Higher unsaturated alcohols containing 12-20 carbon atoms are obtained by hydrogenating a corresponding unsaturated fatty acid or ester at 250-280 DEG C. in the presence of a Raney-type hydrogenation catalyst prepared by pulverizing a ternary aluminium-cadmium-copper alloy containing 30-60% by weight of aluminium, with 4-15% of the remainder being cadmium, treating the pulverized alloy with aqueous alkali solution so that part of the aluminium in the alloy is dissolved leaving at least 1% of aluminium in the treated alloy and waterwashing the alkali solution from the alkalitreated alloy. Preferably the catalyst is subjected to pre-treatment by heating it to 250-350 DEG C. under hydrogen in an inert atmosphere. Acids or esters which are preferably hydrogenated by the process of the invention are oleic acid or C1-C6 esters thereof, olive oil or rice oil. In the examples (a) methyl oleate, (b) butyl oleate, (c) oleic acid, (d) olive oil, and (e) methyl esters of rice oil are hydrogenated using the above-described catalyst.
