Abstract

994,598. Centrifugal separators. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. May 21, 1963 [May 28, 1962], No. 20199/63. Heading B2P. A dust separator comprises a housing 2 having a dirty gas inlet 3 and a clean gas outlet 4 and provided with a primary chamber 11 in which is mounted a rotary impeller 16 for inducing gas flow through the housing and for separating the dust particles, the impeller having blades 23 which project through a passageway 9 connecting the primary chamber to an adjacent secondary chamber 12 so that the outer extremities of the blades lie within the chamber 12, the diameter of the blades being larger at their downstream than at their respective upstream edges. The chambers 11,12 are separated by annular partitions 7, 8 of hyperbolic contour providing the annular passageway 9 between them. The impeller is provided with a conical hub 17 secured to a shaft 18 driven through belting by a motor 22. A shroud ring 24 of hyperbolic contour is fastened to the outer extremities of the blades which are each provided at their downstream edges with a channel 28 for guiding the dust centrifuged by the impeller into the chamber 12. In operation, as the dirty gas stream passes over the blades 23, the dust is centrifuged outwardly towards the shroud ring 24 and is entrained by water sprayed through a sprayer 26 on to the blades. The dust and water along with a portion of the dirty gas stream enter the chamber 12, part of the gas stream re-entering the blades and the remainder passing with the dust and water in a cyclone 14 where final separation takes place.
