Abstract
Polyvinyl alcohol compositions are stabilized by (a) a compound MI of formula <FORM:0994577/C3/1> where R is an aromatic ring and R1 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, (b) a water-insoluble complex between MI and a complex-forming metal salt, or (c) a complex as in (b) together with excess metal salt. The preferred compound MI is mercaptobenzimidazole. Specified metal compounds are cupric sulphate, cupric chloride, cupric acetate, silver nitrate, gold chloride, cadmium sulphate, mercury nitrate, stannous chloride, lead chloride, lead nitrate and palladium sulphate. The stabilizers may be added to melts or solutions of the polymer, which may be formed into shaped articles such as films or fibres. Alternatively the stabilizers or one or more components thereof may be incorporated in the films or fibres by impregnation. In examples, polyvinyl alcohol is stabilized with (1 and 2) 2-mercaptobenzimidazole, together with (3 and 7) cupric sulphate, (4) cupric chloride, (5) cupric acetate and (6) lead nitrate.ALSO:Polyvinyl alcohol fibres are stabilized with (a) 2-mercapto-benzimidazole (MI), (b) a water-insoluble complex of MI and a complex-forming metal salt, or (c) a complex as in (b) together with excess metal salt, by impregnating the fibres with solutions of the stabilizers or components thereof. In examples (1) polyvinyl alcohol filaments are impregnated with an acetone/water solution of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MI), (3) polyvinyl alcohol filaments are impregnated with aqueous cupric sulphate solution and an acetone/water solution of MI, (4) polyvinyl alcohol filaments are impregnated with a dimethylformanide/water solution of cupric chloride and MI, and (6) polyvinyl alcohol filaments are impregnated with aqueous lead nitrate solution and an acetone/water solution of MI.
