Abstract
A fluid, reactor-, strip-, shelf- and mechanically-stable anionically emulsified latex of oxygen- and sulphur-free polyethylene is produced by continuously introducing at, e.g. 80-95 DEG C. and 2000-5000 p.s.i., into a reactor, ethylene and a mixture of water, up to 15 parts t.-butanol, a persulphate initiator, e.g. 0.08-0.3 parts, a pH adjuster to maintain the pH of the mixture above 10, and an emulsifier which is a salt of a C12- 18 saturated fatty acid e.g. 2-5 parts, (parts being per 105 parts of mixture), and continuously withdrawing unconverted ethylene and the latex. The latex may be stripped, e.g. by evaporation from a moving film, to give a fluid latex containing up to 60% of emulsified polyethylene by removal of water and any t.-butanol. The pH adjuster may be tri-potassium phosphate, the initiator may be potassium persulphate and the emulsifier, which may be formed in situ, may be potassium myristate.
