Abstract

The prevention of foam in chemical reactions between liquids and solids or between two liquids, e.g. the reaction of acids upon phosphates or carbonates in the manufacture of fertilizers, calcium nitrate or phosphoric acid, is effected by introducing the reactants into a compartment 1 (Fig. 1) and forcing <PICT:0658700/III/1> <PICT:0658700/III/2> them, e.g. by a pump 5, into the lower part of a reaction vessel 2 at such a speed that substantially no reaction takes place until they are in the vessel, the reaction then taking place in the lower part of the vessel under the relatively high hydrostatic pressure of the mass contained therein. The reaction product is withdrawn through an adjustable outlet 7 and a portion of the liquid may be recycled over the weir 3. In a modification (Fig. 3) the reactants are fed at 19, 20 to a frusto-conical compartment 12 and then forced by a rotary helical pump 15 into the lower portion of reaction vessel 11, reaction product being withdrawn at 16 and a portion of the liquid being recycled over lip 121. One example describes the preparation of phosphoric acid by the action of sulphuric acid on phosphates in the presence of weak phosphoric acid.
