Abstract

Glycol monoethers derived from phenolic hydroxyl groups are prepared by reacting a phenol with an alkylene oxide in aqueous medium in presence of water-soluble neutral salts of alkali and/or alkaline earth metals. Examples describe the preparation of propyleneglycol monoethers of phenol, o-, m- and p-cresols, 3,4-dimethylphenol, p-chloro-m-cresol and pentachlorophenol; the bis (propyleneglycol monoether) of hydroquinone; ethylene glycol monoethers of phenol, p - t - butylphenol and pentachlorophenol: the bis (ethyleneglycol monoether) of Bisphenol A and of tetrachlorohydroquinone; and the 1,2-butylene glycol monoethers of phenol and pentachlorophenol.
