Abstract
The invention comprises steroids having the formula <FORM:0994252/C2/1> in which a double bond may be present in the 21, 22-position; when R = H(OH) or H(OR1), a double bond is present in 5, 6-position; when R = O, a double bond is present in 4, 5-position; and R1 is an acyl radical derived from an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, or aromatic acid having 1-9 carbon atoms; and process for the preparation thereof by reacting a 17a -hydroxy-pregnenolone - 20 - ketal - 3 - acyl ester with dimethylformamide and phosgene or phosphorus oxychloride to obtain a 21-methylene-17a - oxido - pregnenolone - 3 - acylester which may be catalytically hydrogenated to obtain a 21 - methyl - 17a ,22 - oxido - pregnenolone - 3-acylester. The latter two compounds may be subjected to acid hydrolysis to obtain 21-methylene - 17a ,22 - oxido - pregnenolone and 21 - methyl - 17a ,22 - oxido - pregnenolone which may be oxidized to obtain 21-methylene and 21-methyl-17a ,22-oxido progesterones. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-aldosteronic, anti-inflammatory and progestative activity and containing the above compounds are employed orally in tablets, powders, or pills or parenterally.
