In a high-speed printer a printing character drum 1, Fig. 1, is mounted on a rotating shaft 2, the drum carrying a plurality of peripheral rows of alpha-numeric printing characters arranged in pairs, such as 3, 4 and 5, 6 &c., each row comprising a group of contiguously spaced characters followed by a blank space equal at least to the length N<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, of the group of contiguous printing characters in the adjacent row and an additional length R, representing the peripheral displacement of the drum required for a hammer 9 to recover and to be fired again. The groups of printing characters in each row 3, 4 arranged to be acted on by the single hammer 9 are staggered in the manner described, so that only one printing character will be located under the printing hammer at any time. The hammer 9, Fig. 1, is fired by a magnetic coil 10 energized from a hammer drive unit 13, receiving the information to be printed on paper 8, over input wires 14, 15. In another embodiment in Fig. 3 (not shown), a single hammer is arranged to span three peripheral rows of contiguously spaced printing characters and the blank space in each row is equal to at least twice the length of the groups of contiguous characters in the two adjacent rows and twice the length of the hammer recovery time, represented by interval 7 or R in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. In a further embodiment in Fig. 4 (not shown), any number of rows of groups of contiguous characters may be acted on by a single hammer and the blank space in the rows is arranged accordingly.
