An inspection and buttoning jig for a garment comprises a plurality of finger assemblies integrated upon means to operate the assemblies as a single unit each of the finger assemblies having its leading ends formed with a pair of buttonhole penetrating components at least one of each pair being movable relatively to the other component the pairs being supported for removably carrying a portion of the button hole fly of the garment and the components each having a button seat rearwardly of the leading ends to hold the button on the seat removably against displacement. The jig comprises a series of pair of fingers 35, 36 each pair being mounted on a plate 32 slidably adjustably secured by a block 30 to a rod 25 slidably guided in a slot in each side plate 14. The rod 25 is connected at each end to a crank 21 on a shaft 20 slidable in the side plates by rotating a handle H. One finger 35 is fixedly secured to an arm on the plate 32 the other pivoting finger 36 is secured to an arm 52 pivoting on the plate 32. To open the fingers which are closed by a spring 55 between them, a shaft 73 rotatably mounted in the side plates is rotated by a crank arm 74 to bring an eccentric roller 71 secured to a collar on the shaft into contact with a cam 69 on the pivoting finger 36 to pivot the finger to open position. The opening is restricted by fingers 67, 68 depending from a wiper 63 in a block 60 adjustably secured to a brace rod 17. In operation, the fingers are inserted in the button holes of a garment and are opened by turning the crank arm 74 on shaft 73. The buttons are then inserted in recesses in the fingers and the fingers are closed. The plates 32 are withdrawn by operating the handle H and the fingers pass through the button holes the withdrawal being limited by a pin 58 on each cam 52 engaging a cam 59 on each block 60. The fingers are then opened by turning the crank arm 74 and the buttons are released engaging the button holes. The operation may be remotely controlled. In an alternative embodiment for easy adjustment of the number and spacing of the fingers the side plates 32 are secured to U-shaped blocks removably attached to the rod 25 and the wiper 63 is removably clamped to a transverse brace rod 15. The fingers are opened by tapping a key which rotates a shaft mounting a series of projections which abut cams which pivot the finger arms. The wiper 63 mounts a collar which returns the cams to their initial position.
