Abstract

993,899. Jet-propelled aircraft. MESSERSCHMITT A.G. Nov. 8, 1962 [Jan. 18, 1962], No. 42227/62. Heading B7G. An aircraft has two jet propulsion engines 1, 2, with swivellable nozzles 3, 4, mounted one in the nose and one at the rear of the aircraft and having their axes parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. The rear engine is the main propulsion engine, selected for cruise performance, whereas the forward engine has a high thrust: weight ratio and is intended for use only during take-off and climb, and in the event of failure of the main engine. The forward engine is lowered from the aircraft for the latter operation, and its intakes may be covered during cruising flight.
