Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0993746/C2/1> (wherein R is a C1-12 hydrocarbon group and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group) and acid addition salts thereof, and their preparation by (a) reacting a compound of the formula <FORM:0993746/C2/2> with a peroxidizing agent, or (b) reacting the corresponding pyridinecarboxaldehyde 1-oxide with H2NOR, optionally followed in either case by acid addition salt formation. The starting materials for process (a) may be prepared by reacting the corresponding pyridinecarboxaldehyde with H2NOR or by etherification of the parent oxime. The compounds of the invention are antiinflammatory agents, analgesics, anticonvulsants, muscle relaxants, tranquillizers and antipyretic agents, and also potentiate other drugs (see Division A5).ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound of the general formula (I) <FORM:0993746/A5-A6/1> (wherein R is a C1-12 hydrocarbon group and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group), or an acid addition salt thereof, and a carrier. The compositions may be administered orally or parenterally in the form of tablets, capsules, pills, granules, powders, wafers, cachets, solutions, suspensions and emulsions, and optionally may contain one or more other active ingredients (e.g. tranquillizers, psychic energizers, sedatives, hypotensive agents, analgesics, antispasmodics, anticonvulsants, anti - arthritic agents and muscle relaxants). The compounds of the general formula (I) and their acid addition salts are anti-inflammatory agents, analgesics, anticonvulsants, muscle relaxants, tranquillizers and antipyretic agents, and also potentiate other drugs.
