Abstract

A fibrous fabric (see Division D1) which is prepared by a shrinkage treatment from a batt of fibres 50-100% of which shrink by at least 10% under a load of 0,005 grams per denier at 150 DEG C. is coated on one or both sides with a polyurethane resin and patterned to resemble leather or further treated to simulate suede. The batt of fibres may include as high-shrinkage-force fibres polypropylene fibres which are at least partially drawn, together with natural fibres or polyesters, polyamides or other synthetic fibres exhibiting low shrinkage at the treatment temperature envisaged, and may further be treated with resinous or elastomeric bonding or filling agents before being coated as above. Specifications 787,900 and 908,613 also are referred to.ALSO:A process for the production of fibrous non-woven sheet materials comprises forming and then subjecting to a shrinkage treatment a batt of fibres which contains 50 to 100% by weight of fibres which have the property of shrinking by at least 10% of their original length when under a load of 0.005 grams per denier at 150 DEG C. The fibres preferably are not embrittled by such heat treatment. Suitable fibres are those of polypropylene which are at least partially drawn. The batt may be needled to provide initial consolidation, then heated, e.g. by pressurised steam, to about 150 DEG C. to cause shrinkage of the fibres and thereby to consolidate the web further. The batt may be impregnated with a resinous or elastomeric filling compound before or after shrinkage, e.g. a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer may be applied to the impregnated batt which is then squeezed, dried and heated under pressure to provide a leather-like sheet. Coagulation or curing of the filling compound may be effected simultaneously with shrinking of the batt. Other fibres which may be present in the batt include natural fibres or polyesters, polyamides or other fibres which exhibit low shrinkage at the treatment temperature envisaged. The fabric may be further coated on one or both sides, e.g. with a poly-urethane resin, patterned to resemble leather or further treated to simulate suede. Known bonding or filling agents referred to include natural latex emulsions, polyester-urethanes, polyether urethanes, copolymers of acrylonitrile with butadiene or certain acrylate esters, neoprene rubbers, rubbery polymers and co-polymers derived from butadiene or isoprene, and plasticised polyvinyl chloride. Specifications 787,900 and 908,613 also are referred to.
