Abstract

Polyvinyl carbonates are prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with alkyl or aryl chloro-formates in the presence of a base. Specified bases are pyridine, dimethyl and diethyl anilines, dimethyl toluidine, quaternary ammonium bases, and alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hydroxides and carbonates. Preferably the polyvinyl alcohol is dissolved in water, precipitated with pyridine and the water removed by distillation, the reaction with the alkyl chloroformate being effected with the polyvinyl alcohol suspended in excess pyridine. In examples suspensions of polyvinyl alcohol in pyridine are reacted with (1) ethyl chloroformate to give polyvinyl ethyl carbonate, (2) n-butyl chloroformate to form polyvinyl n-butyl carbonate and (3) phenyl chloroformate to form polyvinyl phenyl carbonate. The products give adhesive or flexible, non-tacky films.
