A non-linear voltage digitiser comprises a plurality of series connected identical stages 10, Fig. 1, each one of which comprises two amplifiers 110, 111 receiving respectively the input voltage x i to that stage and the difference x i -e i , where e i is a reference voltage associated with the stage, and a switching circuit 15 for selecting the output of one of the amplifiers in accordance with the polarity as determined by a polarity discriminator 13, of the difference x i -e i and applying it to the input of the adjacent stage. The outputs from the polarity discriminators together give the digital output signal. The Specification explains how to choose the gains of the amplifiers and the magnitudes of the reference voltages so as to approximate to a logarithmic characteristic.
