Abstract
1,078,997. Selecting the largest or smallest signal. A NATHAN. May 12, 1966 [May 18, 1965, No. 21078/65. Heading H3T. [Also in Division G4] In a circuit for selecting the largest or smallest of a number of input signals and suitable for use in a cascade multiplier, the signals are applied to a common point through respective unidirectional conductors and a current is supplied to the common point which is so varied by the potential at the point that the current through the unidirectional conductors is independent of the signal level. In Fig. 3 the signals are fed through diodes to point 3 so that the potential at 3 follows the largest signal. The diodes are biased from constant current sources 21, 22, and the output from the point is fed to a phase reversing operational amplifier 15. Part of the output of the amplifier is used to so vary the current bias from 22 that the diode circuit current remains constant notwithstanding the increasing current drawn by the operational amplifier as the signal amplitude increases. Diode 19 provides voltage compensation and an input terminal 24 receives an " offset " signal. For selecting the smallest signal the diodes are reversed, Fig. 2 (not shown).
