Abstract

992,716. Suction cleaners. MEFINA S.A. March 2, 1962 [May 30, 1961], No. 8241/62. Heading A4F. [Also in Division H2] In a vacuum cleaner comprising a casing formed in three separable parts 10, 3, 2, the front part 10 carrying a suction nozzle 4, the intermediate part 3 containing a dust filter 9 and the rear portion 2 providing a support for the motor 7 and fan 8, the motor-fan assembly being retained within the rear portion 2 by means of a recessed cover plate 19 which is attached to the rear transverse wall 18 of the part 2 by means of long bolts 15 whose heads 17 are seated in countersunk recesses in the wall 18 and which pass through corresponding holes in the cover plate 19, and nuts 28, 29 (or alternatively rings retained against forward movement by means of a small pin passing through a suitably positioned transverse hole through each bolt 15) holding the plate 19 in place over the motor-fan assembly while leaving the bolts free to rotate, the bolts 15 also provide the means for securing the parts 2 and 3 together, the threaded ends of the bolts fitting into corresponding externally threaded members 32 supported by lugs from the internal surface of the part 3 so that the bolts 15 and members 32 may be screwed together by rotation of the exposed heads of the bolts. The motor-fan assembly is provided with a rearwardly extending base 21 which fits into a rubberlined recess in the rear wall 18. The rear wall 18, which is recessed from the end of the rear part of the casing 2 is provided with a connector for the electrical supply and a handle 11 secured to the part 2 carries a button 13 for actuating the onoff switch. If the cleaner is to be used as an upright-type cleaner, a hollow handle 6 may be inserted in a socket constituted by the outlet in the rear wall 18. The handle may be secured or released within the socket by movement of a handle 44 to cause the radial movement of resilient locking pads 41 within the tubular socket. The front part 10 of the casing is secured to intermediate part 3 by means of catches 59 engaging within notches 63, the catches being released by radially outward movement of the forward ends 65 of pivoted lever 60 upon which the catches 59 are pivoted. The nozzle 4 comprises a tube rotatably mounted in a bush 46 secured to a re-entrant portion of the front part 10 to which a paper filtering bag is attached by means of a ring 54. A variable by-pass for the air inlet is provided to permit variation of the suction force of the cleaner, apertures 68 in the intermediate part 3 of the casing being covered to a variable extent by rotation of a disc 69.
