992,481. Gas analysis. HOCHVAKUUM DRESDEN VEB. Feb. 13, 1964, No. 6162/64 Heading G1B. A method for the analysis of quantities of gas smaller than 10<SP>-4</SP> and (N.T.P.) at pressures lower than 10<SP>-1</SP> Torr e.g. a residual gas contained in a vacuum system comprises first adsorbing the gas on a fine grain solid material 3 e.g. glass or metal powder of grain size below 1 mm cooled to an extremely low temperature below -78‹C. by liquid nitrogen 4, and subsequently subjecting the material 3 to continuous heating by a movable oven 7, the individual components of the residual gas being described one after the other in dependence on the rise in temperature caused by the heating, the temperature being measured by a thermocouple 8. In the apparatus shown the material 3 is tungsten powder disposed in a U-type 2. The gas is adsorbed on to the powder by cooling in liquid nitrogen and the oven 7 is then moved down at a constant speed. The described gases are detected in a detector tube 5 and the temperature at which desorption takes plase is characteristic of the particular gas desorbed.
