Abstract
A composition suitable for treating hair comprises an ionic oil-in-water emulsion prepared by polymerizing or copolymerizing one or more organosiloxanes such that the polymer obtained possesses the unit general formula <FORM:0992087/C3/1> in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, a halogenated hydrocarbon radical or a hydrogen atom, there being an average of not more than one hydrogen atom per silicon atom, and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and has an average value of 1.9-2.1, while the siloxane is emulsified in an aqueous medium in the presence of an alkaline catalyst until the siloxane reaches a molecular aggregation of 6.5 cs.-2.5 x 106 cs. at 25 DEG C., the ionic oil-in-water emulsion containing an ionic emulsifying agent and the siloxane being present in the emulsion in an amount of 0.01-90% by weight of the emulsion. The siloxane may be polymerized in the presence of a cationic, anionic or nonionic emulsifying agent, examples of which are given, a cationic or anionic emulsifying agent being added to the emulsion prior to its application to the hair if a nonionic emulsifying agent has been used in the polymerization process. The alkaline catalyst may be a quaternary ammonium hydroxide having at least one alkyl radical containing at least 12 carbon atoms attached to the nitrogen which may be used as such or in the form of the quaternary ammonium chloride, nitrate, sulphate or acetate, an alkaline material, e.g. ammonia, sodium carbonate or an organic amine, being added if the quaternary ammonium salt is used. The siloxane emulsion may also contain methyl cellulose.ALSO:The appearance, manageability and softness of hair after shampooing and permanent waving is improved by treating it with an ionic oil-in-water emulsion prepared by polymerizing or co-polymerizing one or more organosiloxanes such that the polymer obtained possesses the unit general formula <FORM:0992087/D1-D2/1> in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, a halogenated hydrocarbon radical or a hydrogen atom, there being an average of not more than one hydrogen atom per silicon atom, and n is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and has an average value of 1.9-2.1, while the siloxane is emulsified in an aqueous medium in the presence of an alkaline catalyst until the siloxane reaches a molecular aggregation of 6.5 cs-2.5 x 106 cs at 25 DEG C. the ionic oil-in-water emulsion containing an ionic emulsifying agent and the siloxane being present in the emulsion in an amount of 0.01-90% by weight of the emulsion. The siloxane emulsion may also contain methyl cellulose. The emulsion may be added to wave set lotions or to hair tonics.
