Abstract
The invention comprises (1) a process for preparing compounds of the formula <FORM:0991933/C2/1> (wherein each R is hydrogen or alkyl, R1 is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, Q is methylene or ethylene, Y is hydroxymethylene, acyloxymethylene or a ketalized carbonyl group and the o-phenylene group is substituted by one or more hydroxy, acyloxy or alkoxy groups, at least one such group being present in the 3-position) by reducing, reducing and esterifying or ketalizing a compound of the above structure wherein Y is a carbonyl group; and (2) compounds of the above structure wherein R, R1, Q and Y are as defined above and the o-phenylene group is substituted in the 3-position by a hydroxy, acyloxy or alkoxy group. The reduction is preferably performed with a borohydride or with lithium aluminium hydride. Acylation may be effected with an organic acid, particularly a carboxylic acid, and ketalization with, for example, methanol or ethanol or a glycol. In the products, a 3-hydroxy group can be acylated. Also, the products may be converted to 8-iso-steroids by hydrogenation, using a platinum catalyst to saturate both ethylenic linkages. Diene ketone starting materials may be prepared in situ by the process described in Specification 991,592. Examples are given.
