Abstract

991,775. Air compressors. C. W. DAVIS, and STOVIS ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. March 21, 1963 [March 21, 1962], No. 10833/62. Heading F1N. An air compressor comprises a piston working in a cylinder the wall of which has therein a lengthwise groove 12, the groove being open to atmosphere and extending towards the cylinder head to a position less than the length of the stroke thereform, and an inlet valve 5 is arranged to open a port 11 in the piston after the piston has moved for some distance past top dead centre. The compressor has two piston heads 1 connected together by a portion having therein a cylindrical hole 4 which constitutes the slot of a slot and block driving mechanism, the block of which forms the inlet valve 5 and is mounted on a crank pin 9. The hole 4 is open to atmosphere and the valve 5 controls the opening of the inlet ports 11 in the piston heads, each inlet port being formed by three small holes. The cylinder head has an outlet port 13 controlled by an outlet valve 3. The groove 12 may be formed as shown in a cylinder liner 14. In operation each inlet port 11 does not start to open until the piston has moved some way on its inward stroke so that residual compressed air trapped in the cylinder can expand into the hole 4, whereafter the piston uncovers an end of the groove 12 when the piston nears the end of its inward stroke, to ensure that the cylinder is completely refilled.
