Abstract

991,770. Coating surfaces. LICENCIA TALALMANYOKAT ERTEKESITO VALLALAT. Feb. 23, 1962 [Feb. 25, 1961], No. 7209/62. Heading B2B. A process for making heat-, sound-, and/or electrically-insulating coatings on supports comprising simultaneously spraying particles of insulating material suspended in air current and a liquid hardenable binding agent from separate nozzles on to the surface of the support, which process comprises spraying the insulating material through a nozzle by means of an air current the flow of which is deflected from the straight path in the nozzle so that said insulating material is forced towards the wall of the nozzle to produce an air-stream substantially free of said insulating material and another air stream rich in the insulating material, and forcing the liquid binding agent through at least one further nozzle on to the said stream rich in insulating material in order to atomize said binding agent. Surfaces which may be coated include walls, steel or cast iron pipes, and floors. The insulating material may be rice hull, flax or hemp sliver, sawdust, asbestos, nylon or polyethylene. The binder may be epoxy resin, polyurethane, phenol formaldehyde resin, sodium silicate or dextrin dispersed in water or trichloroethylene. Curing promoters, e.g. alum or ammonium chloride, may be present with the insulating material. The articles may be degreased and cleaned by wire brushing or sand blasting, coated with binder alone, to which is applied, preferably before the binder has set, the insulating material and binder jointly, to which a further protective coat may be applied, preferably before setting, this protective coating being richer in binder and/or containing insulating particles of higher tensile strength. The protective coating may include metallic fibres. As shown, insulating particles 3 are carried from container 2 by spiked conveyer belt 5, the quantity of the particles on the belt 5 being adjusted by drum 4, and removed from the belt 5 by drum 6 into hopper 8 from which the particles are drawn into suction inlet of fan 7 and conveyed by air current through outlet duct 9 of fan 7 and metal hose 10 to curved nozzle 11. Also connected to metal hose 10 are the liquid spraying nozzles 12 which are supplied with liquid from tank 14 via pipe 14a and flexible hose 13. Tank 14 is provided with air pressure by piston compressor 16. The moving parts of the apparatus are driven by electric motor 19.
