Type-bar machines for writing on drawings; letter - spacing mechanism. - A letter - spacing mechanism for the type carriage of measurement marking and inscribing machine comprises a fixed carriage rack 13, Fig. 1, mounted on a guide rail resting on a drawing board (not shown) an axle 5 extending parallel to said rack, a first rocking arm 15 having a stepping pawl 16 and a second rocking arm 6 having a locking pawl 7, said stepping pawl 16 and locking pawl 7 being arranged for alternate co-operation with said carriage rack. In operation initial depression of a type key 2, Fig. 2, engages a rail 24 which displaces an element 25 to thereby pivot the rocking arm 15 whose pin 23 engages the rocking arm 6 so as to disengage the locking pawl 7 from the rack 13. Further depression of the key results in the engagement of the stepping pawl 16 in a tooth space of the rack 13, whereby a pin 18 sliding on a cam face 21 of a guide 19 integral with a bearing block 3, displaces the rocking arm 6 with its pawl 7 axially by one tooth space. During continued axial displacement the pin 23 finally glides off the rocking arm 6 so that its pawl 7 will be forced into renewed engagement with the rack 13 under the action of spring 11. When subsequently the key 2 is released the rail 24 will return to its original position and the stepping pawl 16 on the rocking arm 15 disengaged by a torsion spring 17 which at the same time will displace the arm 15 axially into its original position in which it bears against the retaining ring 8 of the arm 6. Back-spacing mechanism.-The back-spacing mechanism is similar to the letter-spacing mechanism above and comprises a back-spacing pawl 28 mounted on a third rocking arm 27, Fig. 1, co-operating with the arm 6 and pawl 7, said arm 27 being displaced by a backspacing key (not shown).
