Abstract

A process for the manufacture of artificial pearls comprises preparing the nucleus of the pearls from animal organic material, said organic material being transparent, translucent or opaque and being submitted to a physical operation consisting of imparting to the material spherical, spheroidal or fusiform conformation with variable generatrix by suitable mechanical means, thus producing a body exteriorly asymmetric with perceptible irregularities such as pores, depressions, veins and the like, which are capable of providing the visual and tactile sensations pertaining to a cultivated pearl. The material used may be the shells of oysters or of land testacea. The nucleus so formed may be coated with one or more layers of oriental essence.
