Abstract

A phase shifter comprises a linear actuator 20 which causes a phase shifting means connected to piston 26 to move within a waveguide 38 and thus alter the path length of a signal propagating in the waveguide. The phase-shifting means may be a reflector 34, a dielectric slab 76 (see figure 8), or a dielectric gel filled bag 86 (see figure 12). The actuator comprises a piezoelectric or magnetostrictive stator 28 which is caused to deform by application of an electric field, so that the deformation laterally squeezes out the piston 26 to the desired extent.
