Nitrogen oxides are detected in gases which also contain halogens and ozone, by contacting in sequence with benzidine or a derivative thereof, an oxidising agent to oxide to higher nitrogen oxides, and benzidine or a benzidine derivative which undergoes a colour change with nitrogen dioxide. A preliminary oxidising step can be added.
