Abstract

991,360. Mounting bearings; universal joints. DANA CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1964 [Jan. 21, 1963], No. 1686/64. Headings F2A and F2U. A method of mounting bearing races 32 on the trunnions 24, 26 of a journal cross 22 of a universal joint, which trunnions are disposed within the holes 28 in the opposed lugs 30 of a yoke 12; comprises inserting the trunnions into the corresponding holes in lug 30, inserting bearing races 32, open end first into each of said holes and around said trunnions and deforming a portion 40 of said lug 30 adjacent each of said holes into said holes and into a pressing relationship with the radially outer face 52 of said bearing races 32. In a modification, a resilient washer is disposed adjacent outer face 52 and portions 40 are deformed to press against said washer. In a further modification (Fig. 5, not shown), resilient elastomeric material engages face 52 and a disc is disposed radially outwardly of said elastomeric material. The portions 40 are deformed to engage the disc and press it against said elastomeric material.
