An edge trimming machine for metal sheets has two shears facing each other at a distance that can be adjusted, each shear comprising a swing frame of C-shaped cross-section in which the top blade slide moves in guides and in which the bottom blade is rigidly fixed and means for swinging the frame sideways away from the cut edge of the sheet, after the cut. The sheet 2 to be trimmed passes along a roller table 1 between shears 3 and 4, a motor 5 and screw 6 controls the distance between the shears. The swing frame 8 is mounted in a housing 7 on a shaft 24, which has a crank connected by a rod 28 to the top blade slide 10. The shaft 24 is driven by reduction gearing from two motors 11 and 12 coupled by a common shaft 15. The parts of the shaft 24 forming the bearings for the swing frame may be slightly eccentric in order to move the bottom blade downwards after the cut. The bottom of the frame 8 is moved away from the cut edge of the sheet by a fluid operated piston 36, the fluid supply to which is controlled by a cam-shaft driven from the shaft 24. Hydraulically actuated hold-downs 37 are synchronized with the movement of the piston 36. The blades 31 and 32 have transverse cutters which crop the trimmed-off material into lengths. In a modification the top-blade is lowered by a single hydraulic cylinder and raised by separate cylinders located on either side of the pressure cylinder. In this construction the lower end of the frame is pulled away from the cut edge of the material by a fluid pressure cylinder attached to the lower rear part of the frame.
