Abstract

Taste-masked pharmaceutical preparations for oral administration, which have hypnotic, sedative and anticonvulsive properties, comprise a therapeutically active compound of the formula <FORM:0991293/A5-A6/1> in which R represents an alkyl group containing up to 5 carbon atoms and R1 represents the phenyl or para-aminophenyl group, an alginate and a liquid pharmaceutically suitable carrier. Suitable active compounds are described in Specifications 720,198 and 829,415; the preferred compounds are a-ethyl-a -phenyl-glutarimide and a -ethyl-a -(p-aminophenyl)-glutarimide, which are preferably used in hydrated or finely divided form. The alginate may be used in the form of an ammonium or alkali metal, e.g. sodium or potassium, salt, or an alkylene glycol, e.g. propylene glycol, ester where the alkylene group contains up to 5 carbon atoms. If an alkali metal alginate is used, this may be rendered water-resistant by reacting, in part, with a salt such as calcium chloride, calcium citrate or aluminium chloride. The preparations may optionally contain a thickener, e.g. hydrated magnesium aluminium silicate or a cellulose derivative, and also preservatives, stabilizing agents, wetting or emulsifying agents, colouring and flavouring agents and other therapeutically active substances. The preparations are preferably used in the form of aqueous suspensions.
