Abstract

Unsaturated cyclic acetals are prepared by reacting a polyhydric alcohol with an unsaturated aldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst at a temperature below 50 DEG C. in the presence of a water immiscible inert solvent which is vaporizable at below 50 DEG C. at atmospheric or reduced pressure and the aqueous layer formed containing the water is separated from the organic layer. The acidic catalyst may be a sulphonic acid. The aldehyde used may be acrolein, methacrolein, crotonaldehyde, chloroacrolein or cinnamaldehyde. The polyhydric alcohol may be pentaerythritol; trimethylolethane; trimethylolpropane; glycerol; 1,2,6 or 1,3,6 - hexanetriol; 2,2,4 - trimethylolpentane; sorbitol; mannitol; ethylene glycol; propanediol - 1,2 or - 1,3; butanediol - 1,3; 2,5 - dimethylol - hexanediol-1,6; hexanetetrol - 1,3,5,6; 4,4 - dimethylolbutane - 2 - ol or a partial ether thereof containing at least 2 free hydroxyl groups. The invention also comprises acetals of unsaturated aldehydes and polyhydric compounds containing at least 2 free hydroxyl groups, the polyhydric compounds having been obtained by reacting a polyhydric alcohol containing at least 3 hydroxy groups with dicyclopentadiene.
