Abstract
990,515. Ballet shoes. V. L. GAMBA, and V. M. GAMBA. June 15, 1962 [June 20, 1961], No. 22290/61. Heading A3B. A method of making ballet shoes in which the material of the shoe upper 12 is pulled over the toe of the last to meet the front end of a sole, and pleated, comprises lasting the shoes right-side out with an insole 25 positioned on the last, attaching a socking runner 30 to the bottom of the shoe to hold temporarily, removing the shoe from the last, sewing together the insole, upper and socking runner at 31, and permanently adherently securing an outsole over the socking runner and stitching thereof. The upper consists of an outer layer 12 of soft leather having secured thereto by adhesive, e.g. rubber solution, and stitching a canvas lining 13. The outer layer 12 has a marginal portion 23 extending beyond the lining at the toe, to which rubber solution is applied on both sides, so that on pleating the pleats remain in place. The ends of the pleats may be skived. Rubber solution is also applied to the inner edge of the shoe upper and to the underside of the canvas insole. The runner 30 may be a linen backed plastic socking runner. The outsole is of hard leather with skived edges, and an anti-slip pattern embossed on the bottom.
