Abstract

[Also in Division B8] In an hydraulic or pneumatic servomotor 2 for operating the clutch or brake of a motor vehicle under the control of a valve 9 which supplies pressure fluid to the right-hand side of a piston 1 for clutch or brake disengagement, the piston 1 itself controls the rate of clutch or brake engagement by sequentially blocking and opening ports 18, 19, 21. For clutch or brake disengagement the valve 9 is moved left by mechanical or electromagnetic means, which latter in the case of a clutch may be controlled by a push-button on the gear-shift lever, whereupon pressure fluid from a pump P moves the piston 1 left. On return of the valve 9 to the position shown, the piston 1 moves rapidly right under the action of a return spring until it blocks vent port 19 just prior to clutch or brake engagement whereupon pressure fluid on the right of piston 1 passes through lines 22, 20 and a restrictor R to vent thus showing the piston 1 during initial clutch or brake engagement. Subsequently the piston 1 opens port 21 thereby establishing unrestricted communication between the two sides of piston 1 through lines 20, 22 so that the piston completes its movement rapidly. A by-pass duct 16 between inlet and outlet ports 13, 14 may be omitted when continuous fluid circulation is not required. In Fig. 7, the restrictor comprises a valve spool 27 which is normally urged left by a spring 28 to provide restricted communication between ports 25, 35. When fluid pressure at 24 which may be a function of engine speed exceeds a predetermined value the valve spool 27 moves right to provide a less restricted communication 36 between ports 25, 35. The spring pressure may be adjusted by a screw 29.
