Abstract

Polyethylene is modified by heating at a temperature of at least 260 DEG C. in admixture with a polymer of a compound containing a CH2=C< group, the temperature and time of heating being sufficient to degrade the polyethylene and effect reaction with the polymer. The preferred polymers are those of propylene, styrene, methyl methacrylate, 3-methyl-butene, butene/ethylene, hexene, isobutylene, butadiene, ethyl/propylene, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethers, diethyl methylene malonate, diethyl itaconate, butyl acrylate, and vinyl acetate/ vinyl benzoate, but many others are listed. The products may be waxy and find application as fibre, film, pipe, floor polish, and heat sealable packaging &c. Example 12 discloses a composition with paraffin wax.ALSO:Paper, e.g. kraft paper, is coated with a modified polyethylene obtained by heating in admixture with a polymer of a CH2=C< compound, to a temperature of at least 260 DEG C., the heating being sufficient to degrade the polyethylene and effect reaction with the polymer. The polymer is applied as a melt and quenched rapidly with a chrome plated calender roll.
