In a machine for forming pies, the pie tops and pie cups are continuously formed from separate layers of dough, and are brought together after the cups have passed through a filling station 13. A layer of dough is unwound from a roll 1 on to a conveyer belt 3 and is passed under a vacuum brush unit 4 and a set of cutting wheels 7 which cut the dough into longitudinal strips. These strips are passed to a further conveyer 8 to overlie dies 8<SP>1</SP>, and are slit transversely but not severed by knives 10 mounted on a roller 9. Punches 12 carried by a forming roller 11 separate the dough pieces and press them into dies 8<SP>1</SP> to form the pie cups, which then pass through the filling station 13. A second layer of dough 14 is unwound on to conveyer belt 16 and passes under a vacuum brush unit 17 and two sets of trimming wheels 18 provided with a water spray 19. The layer passes around the end 22 of the conveyer and is placed moist side downward on top of the pie cups which then pass beneath roller 23 which blanks off the pie tops. The pies are then passed beneath a piercing roller 26 having needles 27, and are then ejected from dies 8<SP>1</SP>. The dies 8<SP>1</SP> are formed with an ejection plate 28 (Fig. 6) resting on a shaft 29 which runs over an ejection rail 31 at the ejection station.
