990, 094. Character display device. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1962 [Nov. 10, 1961], No. 40720/62. Heading G5C. A device for displaying alpha-numbric characters comprises a matrix of movable elements which are moved into a retracted or projected position in dependence upon the character to be displayed. Figs. 1 and 2 shows in section part of a device comprising pistons 3, 4 which move in cylinders 2 under the action of fluid, such as hydraulic pressure applied selectively to inputs such as K 1 ..... K 10 . The piston heads 4 thus occupying either a retracted position 4<SP>11</SP> (Fig. 2) or a projected position 4<SP>1</SP> in which latter position the heads 4 abut a transparent or translucent plate 5 at which they are viewed to form a given character. Stacked plates 8 have grooves cut in their surfaces to form conduits connecting the inputs K 1 &c. with selected pistons so that selected pistons are projected, Fig. 3 (not shown) as required. The space between the plates 8 and plate 5 is filled with a milky fluid which may also serve in place of a spring to return the pistons to their retracted position after energization. As shown in Fig. 4, the region of the merging of conducts is shaped to restrict fluid flow and thus prevent fluid pressure built up in one conduit from being dissipated in others. Each cylinder has a fluid return or exhaust pipe connected to it and extending vertically through the plates 8 as shown, for example, at R in Fig. 1.
