A hardness tester with recording means comprises an impact body 3 which under the action of a spring 5 strikes a bolt 2 and recoils, the body 3 engaging member 8 during recoil so that the recoil distance is shown by a maximum indicator mechanism 7 having a stylus 10 which records a mark, whose length is proportional to the recoil distance on a recording strip 18. The recording strip is preferably transparent with a wax layer applied to one side in which the stylus 10 forms an impression. The strip 18 is wound between a pair of spools 16, 17 and may be advanced a small predetermined distance by means of a pawl 22 which shifts a ring gear 21 forward by one tooth each time the impact body is tensioned for use.
