989,828. Machinery breaking pieces; linkwork. AB KARLSTADS MEKANISKA WERKSTAD. April 26, 1963 [May 18, 1962], No. 16433/63. Headings F2K and F2X. In the control linkage for a guide vane 5 of an hydraulic turbine or pump, a safety link connecting a control ring 2 with a lever 4 fast to the vane 5 comprises two link halves 11, 12, pivotally connected by a breaking pin 14 and coupled by a spring member which allows the link halves to rotate relative to one another when a predetermined load is exceeded. The spring member comprises cup springs 21 preloaded in compression by a nut 27 on a bolt 22 pivoted at one end to a lug 18 on the link half 12 and engaged at the other end 23 by a sleeve 24 which wholly or partly surrounds a breaking pin 19 in a lug 17 on the link half 11. The length of the spring member may be adjusted by a nut 26 on a bolt 25 passing through the pin 19 and fixed in the end 23 of bolt 22. With the link in compression, a small movement of ring 2 after obstruction of the vane 5 merely compresses the springs 21, allowing relative rotation of links 11, 12 while a large movement of ring 2 causes shearing of the breaking pin 19. Vane obstruction with the link in tension results first in failure of the pin 19 and, on further overload, failure of the breaking pin 14 which is subjected to a magnified load due to the bearing of a shoulder 15 of half link 11 against a face 16 of half link 12.
