Abstract
Glass is strengthened by treating it with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate at a temperature above 100 DEG C., preferably 180-200 DEG C. and under a pressure at least sufficient to prevent evaporation of water from the solution at the temperature of use. The SiO2 : Na2O ratio of the sodium silicate is between 1.5 and 3.3 : 1, preferably 2.0 : 1, the solution contains 50-90%, preferably 50-60%, of water, and the treatment time is 30-120, preferably 30-60 minutes.
