A member M, whose linear displacement is to be measured, is rigidly connected to an optical plate O having a front silvered surface S adjacent a second optical flate O<SP>1</SP> of clear glass inclined at a small angle and thereto so that an interference fringe pattern may be formed by monochromatic light from source T, the interference pattern being observed through a grating G so that MoirÚ fringes are seen. The grating placed on the surface of optical flat O<SP>1</SP>, with its rulings set at a small angle to the bands of the interference fringe pattern, and the MoirÚ fringes may be counted by photoelectric cell P, amplifier A and electronic decade counter K.
