[Also in Group XX] In order to measure a displacement of a machine-tool part, an optical grating is moved through the displacement to be measured, and the consequent displacement of a moire-fringe pattern is measured with a scale. Preferably, the scale co-operates with the fringe pattern to form a vernier arrangement (see Group XX).
