Abstract
Dicarboxylic acid N-vinyl imides are prepared by (1) heating the corresponding N-a -acetoxyethyl imide with an acid catalyst and preferably a polymerization inhibitor, or (2) reacting the imide with vinyl acetate in the presence of a salt of a Group Ib or IIb metal. The specified imides are N-vinyl succinimide, phthalimide, tetrahydrophthalimide, naphthalic acid imide, pyromelitic acid imide, a ,a 1-dimethyl succinimide and hexahydrophthalimide. In (1) suitable temperatures are 100 DEG to 200 DEG C., and the specified polymerization inhibitor is Indulin. The acid catalyst may be a protonic acid, a Lewis acid of Friedel-Crafts type, a salt of a weak base and a strong acid, or an acid salt of a strong base and a strong acid. In (2) the specified temperature range is 120 DEG to 200 DEG C. and suitable metal salts are copper (II) sulphate, zinc chloride, and mercuric sulphate. The process may also be carried out in a solvent, e.g. ethyl acetate. Dicarboxylic acid N-a -acetoxyethyl imides are prepared by heating the corresponding dicarboxylic acid imide with vinyl acetate, an alkali, and a polymerization inhibitor.
